Sporting community

 UWE Varsity rowing team

An active community in more ways than one, UWE is the perfect place to be whether you want to make sporting friends or become a future champion.

Join the club

UWE has some of the most active sports clubs in the country. You can join during Freshers Week or sneak in at any point during your time at UWE. We’ve got everything from American Football to Windsurfing, but if your favourite sport doesn’t have a club yet, you can set up your own.

Universities challenge

Varsity is a highlight of the sporting calendar and sees rowers, footballers, netballers and more pull together to battle sporting arch rivals, the University of Bristol. The Boat Race finale sees supporters and spectators line the harbourside in central Bristol to watch the battle for the Varsity title. In 2009, we welcomed back Olympic medallist and UWE alumnus Pete Reed, who helped our team row to victory.

Friendly competition

Social Sport at the Centre for Sport gives you the opportunity to take part in fun sporting competition without any of the commitment or additional training hours. Instead you can enjoy team sports like Badminton, Touch Rugby and Table Tennis at your own pace, have a laugh with friends and maybe even surprise yourself with a new sporting ability.

Advanced athletes

For those students with their eyes on national and international competition, EliteUWE offers a range of bursaries, support and services for advanced sports performers. The Centre for Sport is a great place to up your game while you study.
