Module choice FAQs

If your question is not answered below, please contact a Student Support Adviser who will be able to help you.

When is the system available to change a module?

There will be an opportunity for you to request to change your option modules at the start of the relevant study period. The next opportunity will be from 12:00 noon on Wednesday 5 September 2018 to 12:00 midnight on Sunday 7 October 2018.

What are the different types of modules?

Compulsory

These modules must be taken (and passed) in order to achieve your award.

Core group of modules

You're required to take a specified minimum number of credits from a core group of modules.

Optional

You can choose any of these if you have any 'spare' choices to make.

Your chosen modules (including compulsory) should add up to 120 credits for each academic year.

How can I view a module specification?

Once you have logged into the Online Module Choices system you'll be able to view your optional modules, if applicable. Module specifications will be viewable by clicking on the relevant module code.

Can I change my options after I've chosen them?

While the Online Module Choices system is open, you're able to change your mind as frequently as you wish – providing modules are not full.

However, you must remember that should you de-select yourself from a module and wish to go back to it, it may then be full as someone else may have taken your place.

Your module selections are used in scheduling teaching resources and creating your timetable. There will be an opportunity, depending on space and timetabling constraints, for you to change your optional modules at the beginning of the relevant study period.

There is no guarantee that any option module will run in any year. The decision to run a module depends upon the number of students choosing it and on the availability of staff and rooms.

Failure to comply with deadlines will restrict your module choice and is likely to mean that your preferred options are no longer available.

I’ve forgotten which modules I've chosen – what can I do?

If you log in again after you've submitted your choices, you'll be shown the selection you made along with information about when this was submitted, and whether this selection has been approved.

What if I want to study part time next year?

If you wish to study fewer than 120 credits, please contact a Student Support Adviser.

If you're moving from full-time to part-time study, there will be funding implications. View more information about changing your mode of study.

What if I know I'll be taking additional modules next year?

If you wish to study more than 120 credits, please contact a Student Support Adviser.

I'm taking a sandwich year (placement or study year abroad) – what do I do?

Some courses offer a sandwich year for year two students who are moving into year three in 2018/19.

Confirmed sandwich year

If you have a sandwich year (placement or study year abroad) which has been approved via the Placement or Study Abroad Teams:

  1. Tick option A on the placement question on the online module allocator. You may need to make a choice between placement types if more than one is offered on your award.
  2. You do not need to make your final year module choices.
  3. Save your choices.

Unconfirmed sandwich year

If you're considering a sandwich year (placement or study year abroad) but have not yet confirmed it via the Placement or Study Abroad Teams:

  1. Tick option B on the sandwich year placement question on the online module allocator.
  2. Select your final year module choices for 2018/19.
  3. If your placement is approved later, your final year module choices will be removed.
  4. Save your choices.

If your sandwich year (placement or study year abroad) is confirmed later this year, any final year module choices that you've previously selected will not be saved. Instead, you'll be asked to make your final year module choices for 2019/20 during your sandwich year.

I don't want to take a sandwich year

If you do not wish to take a sandwich year (placement or study year abroad):

  1. Tick option C on the placement question on the online module allocator.
  2. Select your final year module choices for 2018/19.
  3. Save your choices.

How can I confirm my sandwich placement?

If you're doing a study year abroad, you'll already have received an offer from the Study Abroad Team for 2018/19. You should have responded to it to confirm your participation.

If you're doing a sandwich work placement, you'll need to inform the Placement Team once you've secured a potential placement so that your placement proposal can be approved. Please see our confirming your placement guidance.
