Module choice FAQs

If your question is not answered below, please contact a Student Support Adviser who will be able to help you.

When is the system available?

Students will have an opportunity to request to change their option modules at the beginning of each relevant study period.

The next opportunity will be from 12:00 on Monday 8 January 2018 to 16:00 on Sunday 4 February 2018.

What are the different types of modules?

Compulsory

These modules must be taken (and passed) in order to achieve your award.

Core group of modules

You are required to take a specified minimum number of credits from a core group of modules.

Optional

You can choose any of these if you have any spare choices to make.

Your chosen modules (including compulsory) should add up to 120 credits for each academic year.

How can I view a module specification?

Once you have logged into Online Module Choices you will be able to view your optional modules, if applicable. Module specifications will be viewable by clicking on the relevant module code.

Can I change my options after I have chosen them?

While the Online Module Choices is open, you are able to change your mind as frequently as you wish – providing modules are not full.

However, you must remember that should you de-select yourself from a module and wish to go back to it, it may then be full as someone else may have taken your place.

Your module selections are used in scheduling teaching resources and creating your timetable. There will be an opportunity, depending on space and timetabling constraints, for you to change your optional modules at the beginning of the relevant study period.

There is no guarantee that any option module will run in any year. The decision to run a module depends upon the number of students choosing it and on the availability of staff and rooms.

Failure to comply with deadlines will restrict your module choice and is likely to mean that your preferred options are no longer available.

I’ve forgotten which modules I have chosen – what can I do?

If you log in again after you have submitted your choices, you will be shown the selection you made along with information about when this was submitted, and whether this selection has been approved.

What if I want to study part time next year?

If you wish to study fewer than 120 credits, please contact a Student Support Adviser.

If you are moving from full-time to part-time study, there will be funding implications. View more information about changing your mode of study.

What if I know I will be taking additional modules next year?

If you wish to study more than 120 credits, please contact a Student Support Adviser.

I am taking a placement year – what do I do?

Some courses offer a placement year for year two students who are moving into year three in 2017/18. In order to take up this option you will also need to submit a placement proposal for consideration by the Placement Management Team.

If you have a placement which has been approved via the Placement Management Team:

  1. Tick the Placement box on the online module allocator.
  2. You do not need to make your final year module choices.

If you are considering a placement, but have not yet secured one that has been approved via the Placement Management Team:

  1. Tick the Placement box on the online module allocator.
  2. Also select your final year module choices for 2017/18.
  3. If your placement is later approved, your final year module choices will be removed.

If your placement is confirmed later this year:

If a placement is later confirmed, any final year module choices that you have previously selected will not be saved. Instead, you will be asked to make your final year module choices for 2018/19 during your sandwich placement year.

How can I confirm my placement?

Once you have secured a potential placement, you will need to inform the Placement Management Team so that your placement proposal can be approved. See guidance on confirming your placement.

If you are not considering a placement:

Only select your final year modules for 2017/18.
