Eligibility and how to apply
Find out about the minimum criteria for admission onto UWE research degree programmes, the Graduate School application process, and download our application pack.
Minimum eligibility criteria
For a supervised PhD, MPhil or DPhil the normal expectation is that applicants will hold at least a 2:1 or a Masters qualification from a UK university or a degree of comparable standing from a university outside of the UK.
All UWE students must have a recognised English language qualification prior to registering for an award.
Please note: applications which do not meet the minimum criteria will not be considered.
How to apply
If you wish to discuss your proposed research topic with an academic staff member in your field but are unsure who to approach, you can explore the member lists of UWEs research groups and centres or search UWE staff profiles using subject-area search terms (eg robotics) or an individual's name if known.
If you are interested in applying for one of our studentship opportunities, there will be further details in the advertisement about academic staff involved in the project.
If you still can’t find what you’re looking for, please contact us and we’ll try to put you in touch with the right people.
You can download our application pack (see next section below) and will need to submit the following documentation in order for us to consider your application as complete:
- Completed application form
- Research Proposal (within the application form)
- Copies of your academic qualifications (both certificates and transcripts of module/course marks)
- Two references (at least one should be an academic reference from the institution where you gained your highest degree)
- Proof of English language proficiency
Your application will only be considered if it contains the above, and confirms that you have met our minimum criteria. If we need further details or additional documentation we will contact you.
If research leaders in the respective faculty are interested in your research proposal, we will invite you to a formal interview for a more in-depth discussion about your application.
Please download the documents below and ensure that you read the Guidance Notes carefully before submitting your application. Missing or incorrect information will delay the processing of your application.
Please submit your completed application to the Graduate School.
