Industry placement with Land Science
"During my time with Land Science, a ground investigation company specialising in geotechnical engineering, geotechnical design contaminated land remediation; I have become involved in a broad spectrum of projects. Initially being involved in small house and basement construction, to much larger high-risk land remediation projects to large engineering projects working for and alongside high regarded engineering firms such as WSP and Pell Frischmann.
"My time at Land Science is evenly split between time spent on site and time spent in the office. On site using various intrusive investigation techniques such as drilling, trial pitting and probing a ground investigation is conducted to collect primary data on the ground conditions of the site.
"Following a site visit the data collected on site must be tabulated and manipulated to advise on geotechnical design and/or remediation strategy to then be incorporated within a report. Preliminary information such as borehole logs, photos and investigation location figures created on software such as Geodasy and GIS respectively are also incorporated within a report. Preliminary desk studies accessing historical data, current and surrounding land uses and information readily available from the Environment Agency and other local authorities are used to create a conceptual site model.
"Following the initial site visit groundwater and ground gas monitoring is often a part of the investigation processes. I have therefore been trained on how to monitor groundwater and gas, including low flow water sampling.
"I have been trained in CAT, Genny and service safety. I have also become CSCS trained, first aid and site supervision trained. "
