Will - Property Investment and Management
Before graduating, Will beat stiff competition to receive the 'Best Overall Student on a Commercial Property Programme' prize sponsored by the Bristol Property Agents Association (BPAA).
Negotiating for global property giant
As well as BPAA membership and £500 prize money, Will got a six-week work placement with Jones Lang LaSalle's student accommodation team. Within three weeks, he had been offered a place on its Graduate Scheme.
"I was an estate agent before I went to UWE Bristol – I enjoyed the negotiation side but couldn't do much with it. Surveying is a lot more in depth. You're more heavily involved in developing contracts and the legal landlord and tenant relationship.
"I chose the Property Investment Management degree because of its Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors accreditation. This means that, once I've completed two years here, I can take my Assessment of Professional Competence to get Chartered status.
"At the moment, I'm a Graduate Surveyor and work in the industrial and logistics agency team at Jones Lang LaSalle's Bristol office. Next year, I'll be working in valuation. I did an optional three-month's placement in industrial and logistics while studying for my degree. This was valuable experience when I applied for the graduate position here.
"My role here involves acquiring and disposing of industrial and logistical space. This involves negotiation of the principle lease terms for either landlords or tenants. Fortunately, my degree covered a lot of the basics in this area including legal issues around landlord and tenant.
"In the future, I'd like to go into a senior surveyor position at Jones Lang LaSalle – ideally in valuation or agency. It’s a global company so there are lots of opportunities for progression. Fortunately, they have a large client portfolio in Bristol and the South West, so there's lots to keep me busy here!"
