Rachel - MA Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking

Making the right connections

Rachel is a professional artist, illustrator and creator of card and gift range ‘The Brightside’. Rachel's journey started whilst studying MA Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at UWE Bristol.

As a writer and illustrator, Rachel’s ambition was to develop a children’s book, and it was the copper plate etching technique studied at Bower Ashton, City Campus, that got Rachel noticed by Puffin.

Now on her 23rd book and with a popular card and gift brand, as well as being a co-founder of a wellness retreat, Rachel has come a long way and achieved so much since she created her first design in our print room.

Literary success

Rachel’s striking illustrations and typographic style, coupled with her witty storytelling, have resulted in a celebrated collection of acclaimed picture books, published by Hachette (Orchard), Harper Collins, Puffin, and Walker Books. Her titles have been translated into over 38 languages.

Her most famous creations to date include international bestseller The Lion Inside (illustrated by Jim Field – 2016 – currently at 32 co-editions) and the Love Monster series (a US No.1 Best seller), which is also currently optioned for a major animated series. Her newest books are The Koala who Could (illustration Jim Field) which won the Evening Standard and Sainsbury’s picture book awards, The Squirrels who Squabbled (illustration Jim Field) and All I want for Christmas (self-illustrated).

An ‘accidental entrepreneur’

Rachel is also the founder and creator of an award-winning stationery and gift phenomenon, ‘The Brightside’. The collection started as a range of 14 cards and has now sold over 11.5 million cards and five million gifts worldwide. Rachel is launching a new range called ‘Beautiful World’ and has other ranges in the pipeline as well.

A wellness retreat

Rachel is the co-founder of a wellness retreat at Alpha Farm, where she helps to run creative, restorative retreats for the ‘slightly frazzled’.

“We are building a small shared space here in our large barn with screen beds and etching presses for myself and local artists to use. This is part of a wellness retreat revolving around health through body, mind and soul – so will incorporate nutrition, mediation, fitness and creativity.”

“If you’ve got a goal you feel called by, just believe with every fibre of you that it’s going to happen. Someone’s going to do it, so why can’t it be you? If your heart is in it, the way will find you and it won’t feel like work. It might unfold in all kinds of ways you hadn’t imagined so keeping an open mind and an eagle eye for opportunity is super important, but ultimately when you’re in the right pond… somehow the ducks find a way of lining up!”
