Christmas at UWE Bristol

Our campuses will be closed from 16:30 on Monday 23 December 2019 and will re-open from 08:30 on Thursday 2 January 2020. Most services will be unavailable during this time, but some areas will remain open. You can find out more below.

What's on?

We’re running a range of free events every day over the vacation period for students who are staying on campus or in Bristol over the holidays, including Christmas Day lunch and films! If you would like to attend Christmas Day lunch, please book your place so we know that you’re coming!

Libraries

If you want to get a head start on some work, the libraries at Frenchay, Glenside and Bower Ashton will be open every day.

Ask a Librarian, our 24/7 live chat service will be available over the holidays. Our co-operative partners can help with any research questions. UWE Bristol Library staff will respond to any questions that need extra help from Thursday 2 January. No staff will be available during the University closure.

Frenchay Campus – Library

Frenchay Library is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Make sure you check the Christmas vacation access page before you arrive. You’ll need your student card to get in and borrow any books.

The Library Lounge (Level 4) will also be open, where you can heat up your own food or make a hot drink. There’s also a variety of vending machines.

Glenside Campus – Library

Glenside Library will be open every day from 07:30–00:00. You’ll need your student card to get in.

City Campus – Bower Ashton Library

Bower Ashton Library will be open every day from 07:30–00:00. You’ll need your student card to get in.

Over the vacation, we are expecting excessive construction noise levels at Bower Ashton, plus carpet cleaning and AV upgrades at Frenchay Campus. See library service interruptions for further details.

The Farmhouse

The Farmhouse opening hours will vary over the Christmas break, so make sure you check times before you visit. New times are as follows:

  • Monday 16 until Monday 23 December: 08:00 - 17:00 
  • Monday 23 December until Thursday 2 January: closed 
  • Friday 3 until Sunday 5 January 2020: 08:00 - 17:00
  • Monday 6 January 2020: normal 24/7 hours.

Wallscourt Farm Gym

Wallscourt Farm Gym is open to members and on a pay-as-you-go basis on the following days over the festive break:

  • Friday 27 December 09:00-15:00
  • Monday 30 December 09:00-15:00.

Campus catering outlets and shops

Starbucks

If you’re staying in Bristol over the Christmas break, Starbucks on Frenchay Campus will be open for you to relax with other students. Other areas will also open for various events.

What will be closed?

Most student support services, including the Information Points, will be closed for the duration of the Christmas break.

Support for your wellbeing

Talk to someone online with Kooth Student

You can talk to a counsellor online through Kooth Student. It’s free, confidential and anonymous. They will be available every day, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Their regular opening hours are Monday to Friday from 12:00–22:00 and weekends from 18:00–22:00. Their opening hours will be slightly different on the following days:

24/7 textline

The Students’ Union at UWE and UWE Bristol, in partnership with Crisis Textline, have launched a 24/7 textline. This service lets you text for free 24/7 crisis support. All texts are answered by trained volunteers, with support from experienced clinical supervisors.

24/7 support from the Samaritans

The Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Call 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org.

Where to go if you have a problem

24/7 security support

If have a problem on any campus, contact our security team on +44 (0)117 32 86404. They’re available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Emergencies on campus

If there’s an emergency on campus, call +44 (0)117 32 89999 (available 24/7, every day of the year). We’ll send staff to help and we’ll call the emergency services for you so that they can find you quickly.

Accommodation

Please update Accommodation Services if you plan to remain on site over the holidays via your student portal. If you have any questions, please contact Accommodation Services. The Cotswold Customer Service desk on Frenchay Campus will remain open through the winter break, every day between 7:00 and 19:00, so just pop in or call +44 (0)117 32 86227 if you have any problems with your accommodation.

IT support

Out-of-hours IT support service will be available 24 hours a day, every day over the university closure period – just call +44 (0)117 32 83612.

Assessment support

If something happens over Christmas which might affect your ability to do an assessment, don’t panic. You can read our guidance on the assessment support options, but the best thing to do is to talk to an Information Point as soon as they re-open (Thursday 2 January 2020).

Making the most of Bristol at Christmas time

Campus may be quiet, but Bristol’s a great place to be during the festive season – so make the most of the city! From ice-skating to grabbing a bargain in the sales, there’s still plenty to enjoy in and around Bristol over the holidays.

Supermarkets and restaurants

Most supermarkets and restaurants will be open over Christmas (with the exception of Christmas Day) – but double-check their opening hours online before you make the trip.

If you’re staying on Frenchay Campus, check the opening hours of Asda Filton, Sainsbury’s Filton or Lidl Stoke Gifford so you can make sure you’re stocked up.

Transport

Buses and trains may be running reduced services over the Christmas break. Check the First Bus Group website or the Travelwest website to plan your journey and check the timetables before you travel.
