Library accessibility guide

All libraries offer the following:

• Accessible entrances
• Accessible toilets
• Lift access between levels
• Height-adjustable desks
• Assistance with using the library space
• Assistance Dogs are welcome in UWE Bristol libraries.

What technology is available?

The assistive technology provided by UWE Bristol Libraries includes:

• Bookable PCs
• Adjustable furniture
• Task lighting
• Handheld video magnifiers
• High visibility keyboards
• Coloured paper for printing
• Assistive software on student network computers
• ClaroRead text-to-speech
• Mindview mindmapping
• A dedicated assistive technology room or computer that you can use for study, either alone or with a support worker

Not all assistive technology is available at each campus library. Contact your campus library for more information.

Our libraries

Access into the Library

• External doors into the building are power-assisted.
• All external doors and Library entrances offer level access.
• All levels within the building have lift access. 

Facilities within the Library

• Lift to all floors.
• Accessible toilet located on Level 4 in Library.
• Additional nearby accessible toilet - Glendinning foyer, Level 2.

Height-adjustable desks

Height-adjustable desks available on every floor of the library. Some of these are bookable through MyPC.

• Level 2: Two desks with PCs located by the Print Hub. Level 2 accessible floor plan (PDF)
• Level 3: Four desks located in Zone B with a PC located at one desk. Zone B is closest to the IT Advice and Information Centre. One additional desk is located in the Assistive Technology room (3D31). Level 3 accessible floor plan (PDF)
• Level 4: One desk with a PC located in Zone C. Three desks with PCs located in Zone D. The PCs in Zone D can be booked via MyPC. Look for PCs titled sit-stand 1, 2, 3. Level 4 accessible floor plan (PDF)
• Level 5: Eight desks located in Zone D. PCs on four of these desks can be booked via MyPC. Look for the PCs titled Zone D 48, 49, 50, 51. Level 5 accessibility floor plan (PDF)

Assistive technology room

3D31, Assistive technology room. This can be booked via MyPC. Your UWE Bristol ID card may need to be updated to access the assistive technology room. Please contact us.

Other quiet study spaces

• 5D7: This is a small room accessed via the main study floor. This is suitable for silent study only.
• 5D19: This is a silent study room for bringing your own laptop or borrowing a library laptop. Our loanable laptops have a design software build.
• Silent study pods (Level 5, Zone B): Individual pods on our silent floor, which can help concentration.
• Bookable rooms - at the moment, all of our group study rooms are for individual use only.

The Works Learning Zone

There are four height-adjustable tables (sit to stand) in The Works (2F03). These are PC numbers: 9, 16, 17, and 24. These can be booked via MyPC.

Facilities within the Library

• Approach the library helpdesk for help accessing the first floor.
• Accessible and gender-neutral toilets located on ground floor.
• One height-adjustable desk available in Assistive Technology room.
• One height-adjustable desk available outside the East wing (Room 1D001).
• Five height-adjustable desks are available on the upper floor of the Library.

The assistive technology room can be found on the main library floor, in 1D004. This can be booked via MyPC.

• An accessible route into the library via power-assisted doors is available on request.
• All external doors and Library entrances offer level access.
• All levels within the building have lift access.
• The Library entrance door is hinged open during library-staffed hours.

Facilities within the Library

• Lift available for access to the main Library space.
• Accessible toilet available in Library.
• Additional accessible toilet located in corridor outside Library entrance.
• Height-adjustable desks are available.

Assistive technology

A dedicated assistive-technology computer is available.

There are also a number of height-adjustable desks available which are located in the alcoves and north wing. Some of these can be booked via MyPC. Please contact us for further information.

Training is available for all the assistive technology offered by UWE Bristol.
