Quick user guide

Please note, some of the tips below relate to Staff PCs only.

Logging into the System

  1. Switch on your PC.
  2. Wait for the Lock screen to appear:
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Enter password.
  5. Press Enter.
    You will now proceed to the Start Menu:

Please note: the following information relates to Staff PCs
After logging in, the system will remember the last person to login and only a password will be required.

If you were not the last person to login you can click other user at the bottom left of the login screen and enter your username and password.

The Windows Start menu

To get to the' Start menu' select the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
You can also open the 'Start menu' by pressing the Start button on your keyboard. This button can be used to open programs, search for items, shut the computer down and many other activities.

Shut down/Restart the system

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Click Power option directly above the start button
    then select an option
    Right click on the Start button and select an option.

To logoff

  1. Click on your Name/Photo option above the Power option.
  2. Select Sign out option.

Finding an application

Click start .

Available applications are listed in alphabetical order to the right of the Power button. Use the scroll bar to move through the list.

To open an application in the list:

  1. Click on the application.
  2. The application will automatically open on the desktop.

Pin your favourite applications - STAFF PC

For fast access to the things you use the most you can create a tile on the Start menu or pin an application to your taskbar.

To create a tile:

  1. To place an application on the Start menu as a tile you can drag and drop it
    Right click on the application and select Pin to Start.

To pin an application to your taskbar:

  1. Right click on the application in the list.
  2. Select More.
  3. Select Pin to taskbar.

Items pinned to the task bar will be displayed as an icon at the bottom of the screen:

To remove a tile, Right Click on the tile and select Unpin from Start.

To remove an application from the taskbar Right Click on the application and select Unpin from taskbar.

Adding a printer - STAFF PC

Network printers can be added via the Start Menu.

  1. Click Settings option directly above the 'Power' option in the start menu.
    A new window will appear:
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Select Add a printer or scanner.
  4. Click the appropriate printer.
  5. Click on Add device.
    (If the printer required is not listed continue to step 6)
  6. Click The printer that I want isn't listed.
  7. Select the Select a shared printer by name option and enter the printer location and name into the box.
  8. Click Next.
    (If the printer location and name is unknown continue to step 9.)
  9. Select the 'Find a printer in the directory based on location or feature' option.
  10. Click Next.
    (A Find printers window will appear.)
  11. Add a name or location in the appropriate field.
    Please note: the * can be used as a wildcard if you only know part of a name or location
  12. Click Find now.
    (A list of printer matches will appear.)
  13. Select the required printer and click OK.
  14. If appropriate select the default printer option.
  15. Click Finish.

To alter the tile size

  1. Right click on the Tile.
  2. Select Resize option.
  3. Select the required tile size from the drop down menu:

To alter menu and toolbar text size

If you want to adjust text in menus and toolbars you can do this via the Display option in Settings.

  1. In the Settings option on the Start menu select System.
    A new window will appear:
  2. Select Display option.
  3. Move the bar under Change the size of text, apps, and other items to your preferred setting.
  4. Click Apply.
    (You will need to log off in order to apply the change.)

Accessibility features

Additional functionality is available within Windows 10 to help users who may have trouble using their computers normally.

  1. In the Settings option on the start menu, select Ease of Access.
    A new window will appear:
  2. Select the option you wish to amend.

Commonly used options are also available from the login screen. Select the Ease of Access button in the lower-right corner to see them

Changing your password in Windows 10

Eduroam users: Don't forget, when changing your password on your PC or laptop, you must also update your eduroam password on any mobile devices.
