Plant and Bacteria Molecular Biology laboratory

This lab is filled with equipment for carrying out molecular and microbiology research projects.

Molecular Genetics group

headed by Dr Dawn Arnold

This group investigates, at a molecular level, the interaction of plant pathogenic bacteria with plants. Their current research focuses on a number of areas namely; isolation and characterisation of effector genes (avirulence and virulence genes) from plant pathogenic Pseudomonads including analysis of their genomic location and mobility, identification of virulence factors carried on bacterial plasmids and studying the excision and insertion of pathogenicity islands in Pseudomonas syringae.

Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

headed by Dr Heather Macdonald

This group is interested in how plant and algal cells detect and respond to plant hormones and stress stimuli. They are currently investigating the response of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to the plant hormone auxin. We are also looking at the interactions between hormone and stress signalling in plants.
