Dr Mark Broomfield
AQMRC Visiting Research Fellow
Mark Broomfield is a specialist consultant with AEA Technology. He has a PhD in atmospheric chemistry, and has specialised in air quality, odour and health issues since 1992, both within the consultancy sector and as an industry specialist at ICI.
Mark has contributed to over 250 industrial permitting applications and follow-on support projects. He works on land-use planning and local air quality management projects, as well as cross-cutting research work. He contributes to the development of the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory and the Persistent Organic Pollutants inventory.
Mark is an experienced expert witness, dealing with air quality impact assessment; odours; road traffic emissions; environmental and health effects of waste management; and perception of risks to health. This work covers landfill proposals, contaminated land remediation, waste to energy, residential, infrastructure and industrial developments. He works with local authorities, decision-makers, community groups and other stakeholders to achieve consensus on health and environmental issues.
Mark was the lead author for the landmark Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) study "Review of Environmental and Health Effects of Waste Management".
He has completed research for DEFRA and Scottish Environment Protection Agency into the control of dioxins and furans, and carried out influential evaluations of the Government’s Expert Panel on Air Quality Standards and Air Quality Expert Group.
Mark is a member of his local Baptist church, and has been known to sing in public.
