Mallorca Field Trip
The second year geography field trip is a week-long residential trip to the island of Mallorca in the western Mediterranean. It is a large part of a set of core skills developed at level 2.
The trip is focused on exploring the varied geographies of the island and involves undertaking small-scale group research projects at a number of interesting and spectacular locations such as the cosmopolitan city of Palma de Mallorca, the Sierra Tramuntana mountain range, and the coastal tourism environments.
The key themes of the week include gentrification and regeneration in Palma; the impacts of globalisation on Mallorca; rural and agricultural change; natural resource issues; the impacts of mass tourism; and new forms of economic growth and tourism focused on heritage, culture and sport.
Research methods skills are developed on the trip such as undertaking observational and survey work, working as a team, and verbally presenting as a group; all important employability attributes.
The week also offers the opportunity to get to know the lecturers and fellow students in a convivial social atmosphere.
