Brittany Field Trip
The second year BSc Geography field trip is a week-long residential trip to southern Brittany, focussed around the Quiberon and Carnac areas.
Prior to the field based component of the module there is a considerable amount of site specific and research methods preparation and learning that the students complete.
The field trip focuses on developing research techniques whilst exploring the varied landscapes of the region. The key themes studied during the week include:
- coastal landform development
- rocky shore ecology
- human impact and management of heritage sites
- reconstructing past environments
- landscape evolution
- sand dune landforms, ecology and management
Research methods skills are developed throughout the week including undertaking observational and survey work, working as a team, and verbally presenting as a group; all important employability attributes. Each evening there is work to be submitted for assessment by tutors and this gives students the opportunity to gauge their development as researchers in preparation for attempting the level 3 dissertation module.
