Public engagement

Aeroplanes, racing cars and health robots – these are just some of our exciting projects which are changing the face of Bristol and the West of England. Our engagement activities aim to showcase skills and innovation, while also encouraging greater participation in research.

Science Communication Unit

Our Department has close links with UWE Bristol’s internationally recognised Science Communication Unit. Research Fellow Laura Fogg Rogers is developing innovative public engagement projects and is keen to hear your ideas.

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) took centre stage in the development of BLOODHOUND SSC, a car designed to take the land speed record to over 1000mph. Bloodhound@University was developed as a resource for young engineers to get involved with the development of the BLOODHOUND SSC supersonic car. Unfortunately the Bloodhound project was discontinued due to lack of funding.

Each year we support the Imagineering Foundation who deliver Imagineering Fairs at large regional events, including the Royal Bath and West Show and the Royal International Air Tattoo. Between 20,000 and 30,000 attend the Imagineering Fairs each year and enjoy a range of fun, hands-on STEM activities delivered by a range of companies and organisations. In recent years, we have partnered with the IET (Institute of Engineering Technology) and BLOODHOUND SSC.
