Directorate of the Survey of English Place-Names and Somerset Place-Names Project

The Survey of English Place-Names has been running since 1923 with funding from the British Academy and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It produces a Survey volume of a county or part of a county per year, various regional or special volumes from time to time, and, since 1969, an annual Journal. Professor Richard Coates is the current Honorary Director of the Survey (whose administrative HQ is the University of Nottingham), General Editor of publications, and editor for Hampshire.

In association with the Survey, a special volume on Somerset, which has never had a county editor, is in preparation by Colin Turner and Jennifer Scherr.
