Secondary School Direct with UWE Bristol 2018/19

At UWE Bristol we work with several excellent local partnerships who offer a variety of routes into teacher education. As a School Direct trainee you will be recruited by a school partnership rather than the University and this partnership will be responsible for your school-based learning.

Non-Salaried (Tuition Fee) School Direct route

You will be studying at UWE Bristol alongside the core Secondary PGCE trainees and will be awarded the PGCE in Secondary Education from UWE Bristol. For all of our PGCE students, two of the four modules are taught at Masters level, which you might want to use to make up part of an MA Education after your PGCE as part of your career development.

The four PGCE modules:

  • Professional Practice in Secondary Initial Teacher Education: the professional practice (teaching in school) module.
  • Subject Knowledge for teaching in Secondary Initial Teacher Education: the core subject input.
  • Professional Development in Secondary Initial Teacher Education: key knowledge for working in schools such as safeguarding and behaviour management – please note that some partnerships choose to deliver this module within the school setting – if that is the case you will not attend UWE Bristol for this module.
  • Knowledge for teaching in Secondary Initial Teacher Education: the foundation subject and cross-curricular aspect.

We are working with the Concorde Partnership (Bradley Stoke Community School/Abbeywood Community School) to offer the following non-salaried subjects:

  • Art and Design
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computing
  • Design and Technology
  • English
  • Geography
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Modern Languages
  • Physical Education
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Religious Education

It is strongly advised that you consult the school provider to clarify the route and model of training that they offer as this can vary slightly from partnership to partnership. You can find their contact details through the UCAS teacher training website.
