Welcome to the Department of Education and Childhood
The Department of Education and Childhood at UWE Bristol is a vibrant community committed to enhancing and transforming the lives of our students, and the children, young people and adults they work with.
The Department is committed to the following:
- Achieving excellence in all that we do.
- Ensuring an outstanding student experience.
- Promoting equality and valuing diversity.
- Operating through partnerships and co-production of knowledge.
- Creating solutions through research, engaged scholarship and innovative practice.
- Making a difference through civic responsibility and social action.
- Addressing issues of local, regional, national and global concern.
Partnership is at the heart of everything we do, and we have excellent collaborative relationships with a wide range of schools, colleges, early years settings and other learning and cultural organisations. Bristol is a dynamic city with plenty of opportunities for career-enhancing work and leisure.
We run an undergraduate degree for trainee primary teachers, and a programme for colleagues who have a Foundation degree and who are already working in educational support roles to complete an Honours degree. We also have a thriving Early Childhood programme designed for those who want to work with and/or on behalf of. This programme leads into a variety of interesting careers, and some of our Early Childhood students also study for Early Years Teacher Status alongside their degree.
If you are already a graduate and thinking about teaching, you can study for a PGCE in Early Years, Primary, or one of nine subjects for those interested in a Secondary PGCE. We have been judged by Ofsted to provide high-quality courses across our teacher education provision, with our secondary teacher training rated as outstanding and our primary teacher training rated as good with outstanding features. We are also working with schools and teaching alliances across the region as strategic partners in School Direct postgraduate teacher training.
For qualified professionals we run a very successful MA Education programme, and a Professional Doctorate in Education as well as offering opportunities to collaborate on work-based research projects. We also run a very relevant and forward-focused Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education for those working in the Higher Education sector.
Experienced tutors and leading researchers and practitioners in their fields teach in the Department. We are fortunate to be based in a state-of-the-art purpose-built building with excellent IT facilities and an Open Learning Area with the latest equipment to support learning and teaching.
We hope we have provided much of the information you need and will be pleased to answer your queries; we look forward to working with you in the future.
