School profile by Nicki Machin

Filton Avenue is an infant school with three class intakes a year. All classes contain 30 children. Children come from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds and generally enter our school with low literacy levels. By the time they leave at the end of Key Stage One, they equal or exceed National Expectations.

School Awards; ECAR and ECAR leading school, Bristol standard for Early Years, Healthy schools. OFSTED: Latest OFSTED July 2011 graded 'Outstanding'.

Staff: Head teacher; nine class teachers (Deputy Head is also a class teacher); four HLTAs - each class has either an HLTA or a LSA - and all LSAs and HLTAs are trained to deliver Read Write Inc, Maths Makes Sense and literacy intervention programmes; one Reading Recovery teacher who is a leading practitioner in Bristol; two office administrators, and a School Business Manager and a SENCO who also work in our partner junior school.

Trainees: every year we welcome trainees into each of our year groups.

For the past two years we have hosted 25 PGCE students during their serial Language for Learning days. Our staff have worked in partnership with UWE for the past two years as Leading Literacy Partners, coming into the University to deliver sessions on Phonics, Reading, Writing and Assessment. We have also worked with UWE to make a DVD of Teaching and Learning in Literacy which the University uses as a sustainable teaching resource. We value our links with UWE and believe we have a strong and effective partnership with the University (backed up in our Ofsted report.)
