What is the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship?

The Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship gives current and aspiring managers in your business the opportunity to enhance and maximize their management expertise, with all tuition fees funded through the Apprenticeship Levy.

Based on the Level 5 ILM Diploma in Leadership and Management, this programme is designed to give your staff a firm understanding of best practice in delivering projects, leading teams and managing change.

Alongside investigating key business concepts and management systems, they’ll build on essential interpersonal skills, from effective delegation to coaching techniques. All the models and processes they explore are tried and tested, meaning you can be confident your organisation is benefiting from the very latest thinking.

Who is the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship for?

Anyone in your organisation who aspires to lead teams and operations more effectively will benefit from this apprenticeship. Learners should either be in or transitioning into roles such as Operations Manager, Regional or Divisional Manager, and specialist managers.

Through a blend of theory and practice-based tasks, the programme will strengthen the skills of those involved in a range of management activities, including delivering operational plans, co-ordinating projects, and overseeing resources.

Indicative content

Study units:

  • Operational management
  • Project management
  • Finance
  • Leading and managing people
  • Building effective working relationships and communication skills

Assessment will be through written project assignments, a learning portfolio and a work-based project.

Delivery consists of classroom-based elements and online learning/independent study activities.

Qualification, professional registration and accreditation

On completion of the programme, learners will achieve the Level 5 ILM Diploma in Leadership and Management.

Successful apprentices can register as full members with the Institute of Leadership and Management.

Duration and delivery

The programme will be delivered over two years through a one-day induction event, five main study units and ongoing support and coaching. Each of the study units will be delivered over two days face-to-face, and supported through workbooks and comprehensive online materials.

Entry requirements

All applicants should have a GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English Language, be in employment, and have relevant work experience.
