Professor Lukumon Oyedele is the Director of the Big Data Laboratory (BDAL) at UWE Bristol; and he is Professor of Digital Enterprise and Project Management. Prior to this, he was the Head of Division of Project Management and Sustainability Division at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). He also worked as a Senior Executive Director at Lahn Development (UK) Ltd and was a Project Director at a multinational company named Sagem SA, France/Nigeria.
In terms of his personal research track-record, Professor
Oyedele has received more than £12 million in research funding from
various funding bodies (e.g. Innovate UK, EPSRC,
Department for BEIS). He has
written more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed international
journals and conferences. He is on the Editorial Board of five
prominent Journals in his field. He is also a Visiting Professor to
many universities in USA, Canada, China, Brunei,
Malaysia and UAE.
Professor Oyedele has served on several advisory panels and
committees of governments and private organizations in the UK and
overseas in the areas of Technological Enterprise, Big Data,
Reality, Visualisation and Simulation Platform, Strategic Project
Management, Innovation, PPP/PFI Projects, Sustainability,

Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence/Data Visualisation
Dr Ajayi is a fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI), USA, and, currently works at the UWE Bristol. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Lorraine (Nancy, France); University of Eastern Finland (Kuopio, Finland); and University of Zululand (South Africa). He has over 17 years of experience in research, teaching, and administration at the Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria). He is interested in using techniques such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data analytics, IoT, optimisation, construction informatics, simulation and visualisation to solving critical and challenging problems in construction, energy, education, and health domains. He has over 40 publications in journals of repute and conference proceedings.
Dr Lukman Akanbi holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from the Obafemi Awolowo University (Ile-Ife, Nigeria). His areas of expertise include Internet of Thing (IoT) based application development, Big Data Analytics, Machine Learning, Intelligence Systems, Image Processing and Natural Language Processing. He has developed a number of IoT sensors controls for home automation and irrigation system. He has over 12 years of experience in research and teaching. He has over 25 publications in reputable journals and conference proceedings. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Lorraine (Nancy, France).
Dr Olugbenga Akinade has a PhD in Construction Informatics from the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol. His research transcends knowledge boundaries through effective research leadership and industry engagement for delivering innovation with high-impact research to businesses. His cross-disciplinary research interests cut across Advanced Visualisation/Simulation using Building Information Modelling (BIM) and AR/VR, Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT) and Project Management. He has been actively involved in the application of emerging techniques in these areas to address real-life problems in the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industries. This is evidenced in his direct involvement in the successful delivery of various research projects. With over 12 years of experience in research and teaching, he has published over 50 papers in reputable journals and conferences.
Dr Muhammad Bilal is a distinguished academic with considerable industry exposure in the design, development and maintenance of enterprise business solutions. For the past 15 years, he has served several roles as the data architect, data analyst, data scientist, database administrator, machine-learning (ML) practitioner, and software engineer. Dr Bilal holds a PhD in Big Data Analytics from UWE Bristol. During his PhD, he developed a big data-based tool for the UK largest construction firm (Balfour Beatty) to benchmark and predict the profitability performance of linear construction projects. His research interests include Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Semantic Web, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Geospatial Analysis and Mining. His interests in these cutting-edge digital innovations are solely for developing solutions to help businesses in improving their performance. Bilal has tremendous experience of leading and successfully delivering mega research and development projects in collaboration with the top UK businesses. With extensive research and teaching experience, he has over 50 publications at high-impact journals and international conferences.
Associate Professor in AR/VR and Artificial Intelligence
Dr Manuel Davila is an expert in developing novel digital solutions for the construction and engineering sectors. His interests and expertise are a mix of Machine Learning, 4D technical simulations, AR/VR, BIM, structural engineering and optimisation. He has carried out research at the Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands), the National University of Singapore, the University of Cambridge, UK, and currently at the UWE Bristol, UK. His research has helped top companies in the UK (e.g. Balfour Beatty, Costain, and Schneider Electric) to adopt novel emerging technologies and develop digital solutions that enable data-driven decision-making. He has over 28 publications in reputable journals and conference proceedings.
Associate Professor in Data Science
Dr Kamran Munir holds BSc (1999), MSc (2001) and PhD (2010) Computer Science degrees. His current research projects are in the areas of Data Science, Big Data and Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality mainly funded by the Innovate UK. In the past, he has contributed to the various CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research, Geneva Switzerland) and European Commission (EC) funded projects e.g. CERN WISDOM, CERN CMS Production, EC Asia Link STAFF, EC Health-e-Child, EC neuGRID and EC neuGRID4You (N4U) in which he led the Joint Research Area and the development of Data Atlas and Analysis Base, Big Data Integration, Big Data Analysis and Information Services.
Dr Munir has published over 50 research articles; and he is a regular PC member and editor of various conferences and journals. Dr Munir's role also includes the leadership/production of Computer Science and Data/Information Science degree courses/modules in collaboration with the industry such as Big Data, Data Science and Information Practitioner. He also enjoys frequent collaborations with post-graduates, conduct of R&D work with industry and has a number of successful MPhil and PhD theses supervisions.
Associate Professor in Project Analytics and Digital Enterprise
Dr Hakeem Owolabi's area of expertise is cross-disciplinary and cuts accross two key knowledge domains namely, project analytics/strategic project management and digital innovation. His competencies involve leveraging digital technologies like Big Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and IoT to gain valuable insights into day-to-day operational, business and project-related challenges. He is an expert in project analytics, project management, international project finance including Project Enterprise (PFI/PPP projects), and governance in public procurement.
Dr Owolabi has more than 13 years of industry, teaching and research experience, including memberships with reputable professional associations like APM and IPMA. He has over 40 peer-reviewed articles published in highly-rated international journal publications, in addition to conference articles.
Dr Chukwuka Monyei is a Research Fellow on energy policy and sustainable decarbonisation at UWE Bristol, where he works as a researcher and consultant on issues pertaining to sustainable energy systems modelling, energy policy, energy security, energy poverty and adaptive climate change mitigation. His research spans core electrical engineering, the social sciences and computer science and focuses on sustainable development, renewable energy systems, smart grid, applied artificial intelligence, energy efficiency and the design of public policy to help facilitate easy access to electricity and improvement in the resilience of energisation systems.
Research Associate - Big Data Application Development
Sofiat Abioye is currently a Research Associate at the Big Data Analytics Laboratory (BDAL), UWE Bristol, with considerable industry experience in developing software solutions to tackle real-life problems. She is also a part-time PhD student at the Faculty of Business and Law, UWE Bristol. She holds a degree in Computer Science with Economics from Obafemi Awolowo University. Her cross-disciplinary research interests cuts across Machine Learning, Data Analytics and visualization, IoT, AR/VR and Artificial Intelligence.
Taofeek holds a Masters degree in Computer and Automation Engineering from the University of Siena (Italy). His multi-disciplinary research interests focused on the implementation of digital technologies like IoT, Deep Learning and other AI algorithms, and the challenges faced in the engineering and construction domain. Experienced in software development using cutting edge programming technologies, Taofeek is highly involved in the delivery of past and current Big-DEAL projects while also working on publications in reputable journals.
Research Associate in Digital Construction
Sikiru Abiodun is a part-time Research Associate on ‘Digital Construction with Big Data’ at UWE Bristol and a full-time PhD researcher at the London South Bank University, UK. He graduated with a first-class in Architecture from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) (Nigeria) and is a chartered architect with the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA). His research interests include: Building Information Modelling (BIM), Knowledge Management (KM), Construction Project Management and Environmental Science and sustainability. With over 10 years of teaching, research and industry experience, he has over 20 publications in reputable journals and conference proceedings.
Research Associate in IoT Sensors and AR/VR Implementation within Construction
Habeeb is currently a Research Associate at the Big Data Analytics Laboratory (BDAL) based at UWE Bristol. In parallel to being a Research Associate, Habeeb is also a doctoral researcher in the development of AR/VR and IoT sensors applications and their implementation within the construction industry. Habeeb holds an MEng in General Engineering from the University of Leicester. Shortly before BDAL, Habeeb worked with Balfour Beatty as a Data Analyst and as an Assistant Project Manager on a large R&D project which used Big Data Analytics to create an innovative digital solution that ameliorated profitability decisions. Habeeb’s area of interests borders around the application of digital technologies (AR, VR, MR, IoT, BIM, AI etc.) to support and enhance the construction industry to deliver projects with low cost, higher profit, better quality and minimum or zero health and safety issues. Other related areas of interest include 4D design and cyber security.
Research Associate in Project Reputation Using Digital Technologies
Mr Oladimeji Olawale is currently a Research Associate at the Big Data Analytics Laboratory (BDAL), UWE Bristol. Co-mingled with this role, Oladimeji is also a part-time PhD researcher working on ‘International Business Reputation: The Case of UK MNCs in Overseas Project Delivery’ in the Faculty of Business and Law, UWE Bristol. Oladimeji holds a MA degree in International Relations and a BA (Hons) degree in History and International Relations. His broad cross-disciplinary research interests cut across International Relations, International Business, Project Management and Digital Technologies. Despite his recent foray into R&D and academia, Oladimeji has been involved in the successful delivery of various research projects tackling real-life problems in UK industries and he has over five publications in reputable journals and conference proceedings.
