Among the many summer 2018 projects, £1.25 million was spent on works to relocate mathematics from Q Block to E Block, creating a new hub. The works were completed in September 2018 in preparation for the new academic year.
Planning permission has been received for UWE Bristol's new multimillion pound Engineering building. Work has now begun on the facility at Frenchay Campus that will provide specialist workshops, study areas and laboratories accommodating a wide range of engineering disciplines such as composite manufacturing, machining and metrology. The building, granted consent by South Gloucestershire Council, will contribute to the University's vision of promoting multi-disciplinary, collaborative learning and supports the predicted increase in demand for skilled engineering graduates across the region. As part of the University’s rolling programme of toilet refurbishment throughout the three campuses, the separate male and female toilets in OneZone were converted into a high specification gender neutral and disabled facility. Three toilet facilities have also been upgraded in D Block (gender neutral) and E Block.
Conversion of Cribs B café into The Grill began in late July 2018 and the restaurant opened to Students in September 2018. The restaurant also provides a modern social space. Refurbishment of other catering outlets will continue across the campuses. View all our bars, cafes and shops.
Health and Applied Sciences infrastructure upgrade
Works were completed in September 2018 on the upgrade to the infrastructure within Blocks H and G to L. A total of £7.5 million has now been spent on building fabric upgrades and refurbishment of laboratories and office space over a three year period, greatly improving facilities and ensuring all systems comply with current safety regulations.
Combined Heat and Power plant
UWE Bristol has approved a business case to install a new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at Frenchay Campus. It is anticipated that the CHP engine will be installed/commissioned early 2019 with energy being supplied to T Block, Exhibition and Conference Centre, Students' Union at UWE and Bristol Business School by March 2019 (Phase 1). The connection to SAP2, D Block and Z Block (Engineering) (Phase 2) will follow on.
Q Block corridor refurbishment
As part of ongoing maintenance and refurbishment, £120,000 was spent on Q Block corridor, improving circulation areas through enhancements to decoration, flooring and ceiling, lighting upgrades and replacement of doors.
In line with the four year strategic programme of maintenance of the accommodation within the Student Village, £150,000 has been spent on Brecon Court to improve the internal and external decoration of the residential block.
Throughout summer 2018 six teaching rooms were demolished along B Block corridor to create The Forum, an open access learning space, providing over 100 additional student study spaces. The Forum contains 40 high specification PCs, additional powered workstations for students to bring their own IT equipment, state of the art furniture for enhanced collaboration and a dedicated print hub. An additional asset within the space is The Lobby, an area dedicated to the facilitation of conversation and dialogue within the social sciences.
PGR Resource Centre
The PGR Resource Centre works comprised the reconfiguration and refurbishment of the existing 220m2 of space to provide a more flexible, usable and collaborative work area for HAS Faculty graduates. The internal refurbishment included layout changes, to provide an open plan office space, and enhancement of all finishes, with the addition of two offices, a meeting room, main corridor upgrades and a breakout space. The works commenced in June 2018 and completed in July 2018 at a cost of £270,000.
Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre (formerly the NHS laundry)
The new Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre at Glenside campus is now open. This exciting new space is home to a range of health and social care programmes, including a brand new BSc (Hons) Optometry programme, Paramedic Science courses, all four fields of Nursing and Midwifery and Post Graduate provision. Phase one of a two phase package of works to enhance wayfinding and signage has taken place in 2018. Of the £179,000 spent on works to date, signs at the main entrances of all three of the University campuses, as well as at Information Points and Gate Houses, were replaced alongside further directional signage into the campuses.
Campus refurbishment programme
UWE Bristol is in the process of enhancing the student experience by improving connectivity between discipline areas throughout the older parts of campus and promoting greater collaboration and a more coherent experience. An architect is being appointed in October 2018 to undertake a feasibility report, which is the first part of the programme. Minor works have taken place throughout summer 2018, including enhancement of the courtyards.View our campus developments showcase
