UWE Bristol's Heartbeat programme
The Heartbeat programme is the Centre for Sport's cardiac Phase IV rehabilitation programme run in partnership with Southmead hospital.
About the rehabilitation programme
Heartbeat is a 12-week rehabilitation programme, which aims to guide patients through changes to their exercise patterns in order to enhance their lifestyle, and to aid the prevention of further cardiac episodes.
Taking part in the programme
Patients are referred to the Centre for Sport from their Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase III programme specialist. One of our qualified Phase IV instructors will then contact the patient to either book their initial consultation, which counts as the first session of the 12-week gym based programme or book them into the cardiac class for 12 weeks.
12 week gym based programme
This is a flexible programme with an initial consultation and programme design with one of our qualified instructors. This will be followed up with three programme reviews and a lifestyle chat.
Price: The initial consultation costs £10 and includes the Heartbeat programme membership fee and an access card for parking at the Centre for Sport. Subsequent sessions cost £2.50 each.
12 week cardiac class
The class is weekly on Mondays from 13:30–14:30 and is delivered by a phase IV qualified instructor.
Price: £30 per person for the 12 weeks.
Training partners for the gym-based programme
We are aware that it can sometimes be challenging to exercise independently. As such, patients are welcome to invite a spouse or friend to join them for the 12-week period at the same rate (see below).
After the programme has finished, you and your training partner can become a member of the Centre for Sport at the concessionary rate of £245.
Additionally, there are progression cardiac classes every Monday (14:45–15:45) and Friday (10:00–11:00) which are available upon completion of the Phase IV programme.
