Experience virtual flight
UWE Bristol’s flight simulator provides a fantastic opportunity for aerospace engineering students in the Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics to experience virtual flight and test their engineering models in a sophisticated aerodynamic simulation.
The Merlin MP521 flight simulator 'pilot' operates controls using a full instrument panel and a real-time visualisation. The cockpit capsule is mounted on six hydraulic legs that combine to replicate in-flight turbulence and other aeroplane movement.
Students are able to input design concepts into the simulator and the sophisticated software will adjust the aerodynamic performance of the virtual aircraft.
Understanding a model’s output data in order to assess design modifications in a virtual environment is a crucial part of the aerospace engineer’s skill set.
