Sumeet Grover

Postgraduate profile

Course: MSc Software Engineering
Current role: Consultant, Rule Financial, London

The MSc Software Engineering course provided Sumeet with the skills and knowledge required to become a Consultant for a large IT company.

What path did you follow from completion of your undergraduate degree to your current job?

I enrolled on the MSc Software Engineering course at UWE immediately after completing a BSc(Hons) in Software Engineering. Having successfully completed the Master’s degree, I got a job in a small web design and development company in London, where I had lots of opportunities to talk directly to decision makers in client companies and develop stable software applications.

I moved to the international IT consultancy, Rule Financial, 19 months later. My role at Rule Financial involves maintaining existing software and carrying out extensive testing of the code that I write. I am currently working on a project within the UBS Investment Bank office.

Why did you decide to undertake postgraduate study?

I wanted to possess a very strong intellectual background in software engineering and use the knowledge I gained on my course to directly contribute to the growth and success of my organisation.

Why did you choose UWE?

UWE’s tuition fees were competitive and the university was well ranked in the list of new universities.

What do you feel you gained from undertaking postgraduate study?

The most prized experience of studying a Master’s at UWE was the process of postgraduate research with very high standards expected of students. This experience in particular has brought me to a point where I am never scared of even the toughest of things professionally.

In addition, I would say that everything I learned on the course was absolutely at the level of technical understanding and skills expected in big IT companies in which critical software is developed.

What about your plans for the future?

My aim was to be a Consultant in a big IT company within four years of completing my Master’s and I feel very pleased to say that I achieved my aim in just 19 months, even though at a junior level. After few years, I might pursue a part-time PhD degree, since that is something I would really like to do.

What advice would you give students who are unsure which career path to take?

Choosing a career path is 100% a personal choice; all I would say is that whichever path you choose, make sure that you are absolutely confident and convinced of it.
