UWE BoxED activities - Science

View the range of interactive and fun science-related activities that UWE BoxED currently offer.

Build wind turbines

Activity title

Build wind turbines

Target audience

Key Stage 3-4

Brief description of learner outcomes

Pupils work in pairs to design and build a simple wind turbine blade system. All designs are tested in class to see who can light up an LED, and whether anyone can charge a mobile phone with their turbine. Forces, angles and material properties are central to the design process, in a hands-on exploration of physics and engineering.

National Curriculum links

KS3 Science:  Nature, processes and methods of science; consider career opportunities both within science and in other areas that are provided by science qualifications.

Where will the activity run

At school (science or Design Technology classroom).

How the activity will run

50-60 minute session with a maximum of 30 students - session delivered by UWE undergraduate students studying subjects related to content.

Micro-plastics and microscopes

Activity title

Micro-plastics and microscopes

Target audience

Key Stage 3-4 (Years 7-10)

Brief description of learner outcomes

Pupils will use university standard microscopes to explore the ecosystems of our oceans and understand the issues of toxic accumulation of micro-plastics. Comparing real samples of diverse marine zooplankton to beauty products containing micro-plastics, they will get a first-hand understanding of food chain interdependence and human impact on marine environments.

When will the activity run

September to June.

STEM roadshow

UWE undergraduates present three concurrent interactive activities (all 20-25 minutes) in three classrooms or spaces. School pupils get a chance to participate in all three (which represent a range of maths, engineering and biology related topics). In previous years, these activities have included robot coding, diagnostics and psychology activities.

Key Stage 3 (Year 8)

Brief description of learner outcomes

  • See a range of exciting STEM themes explored in engaging activities
  • Understand the links between subjects, especially maths and science
  • Meet undergraduate students and higher education options

When will the activity run

June-July.

Where will the activity run

At school.
