Street art maths

This activity is particularly suitable for lower or medium ability or unmotivated students from across Key Stage 3 and 4.

Street art maths

Target audience

Key Stage 3-4 (Years 7-10).

Brief description of learner outcomes

This fast-paced activity works through different skills and techniques to show how street artists rely on maths. Drawing in one-point perspective to produce 3D shapes, geometric patterns, problem-solving for Banksy and using enlargement to scale a mural all give pupils an insight into the applications of maths in graphic design and art.

At school.

How the activity will run

50-60 minute session with a maximum of 30 students - session delivered by UWE undergraduate students studying subjects related to content.

Session can run up to four times in one day – booking must be for a minimum of two sessions.

Stormchasers (under development)

This activity is aimed at higher ability learners in Years 9 and 10.

Activity title

Stormchasers

Target audience

Key Stage 3 - 4 (year 9-10).

Brief description of learner outcomes

Working in teams, students use data, graphs and equations (provided) to predict where they think the storm will hit. Resulting predictions will show the impact of estimation and the complexity and value of maths to weather forecasting.

How the activity will run

50-60 minute session with a maximum of 30 students - session delivered by UWE undergraduate students studying subjects related to content.

Sessions can be run up to four times in one day - booking must be for a minimum of two sessions.

STEM roadshow

UWE undergraduates present three concurrent interactive activities (all 20-25 minutes) in three classrooms or spaces. School pupils get a chance to participate in all three (which represent a range of maths, engineering and biology related topics).

Understand the links between subjects, especially maths and science.
Meet undergraduate students and higher education options.

How the activity will run

90 to 120-minute session for between 40 to 80 students per session - session delivered by UWE undergraduate students studying subjects related to content.
