PAL in action

students talking

Your PAL Leader will help you to make the most of your study time and course materials during PAL sessions.

How does PAL work?

In each session, you will be guided through course concepts by your PAL Leader, a competent student who has previously taken the course and been trained in group facilitation techniques.

Whilst your Leader will not re-lecture you, give you their class notes or do your homework for you, they will help you to make the most of your study time and course materials.

Their role is to help you think about your lectures and your course material, and facilitate putting it all together into some kind of perspective during PAL sessions, so you can learn it more efficiently.

What are the benefits?

Some of the benefits of the Peer Assisted Learning scheme are:

  • helps new students adjust to higher education
  • improves ability to master course concepts by providing students with an opportunity to discuss or practice their subject in confidence
  • helps build confidence and self esteem
  • develops enhanced study techniques
  • gives discreet support to those who need help
  • provides a clear view of course direction and expectations through sessions led by PAL Leaders
  • it is free!

How to get the most out of PAL

Students' success on their course depends upon their own efforts and in order to get the most out of PAL, it is important that students:

  • attend regularly
  • come to sessions prepared and with appropriate resources
  • actively participate in group discussions and workshops

Please note: neither PAL staff nor PAL Leaders take responsibility for students' marks or grades.

What are PAL sessions like?

Sessions are intended to offer a safe and friendly place to help you to:

  • adjust quickly to university life
  • improve study skills
  • deepen your understanding of your course subject by using content based around course materials (handouts, notes, textbooks)

The PAL scheme is free and you can attend as often as you like. Keep in mind that the more you attend, the better your course grades are likely to be.
