GDP Awards 2011
The GDP Awards 2011 were presented at the annual UWE 'bettertogether' award ceremony held on 24 June.
Tutor of the Year Award
The Tutor of the Year award 2011 was presented to
Nicholas Smith from Planning and Architecture (pictured). Nicholas
received an unprecedented 33 individual votes from students who
praised him for his support, his approachable manner and as someone
who demonstrates passion and commitment to the student
experience.
Nicholas Smith said: “I was really pleased to win the award as it provided an excellent end to the academic year. I was delighted that my students had taken the time to vote for me and for the kind comments that they made in support of their nominations. I am glad that GDP has played a role in improving their student experience and am grateful for their ongoing enthusiasm and engagement with programme activities. GDP provides an opportunity for many skills and competences to be developed which will be essential as our students enter the world of work”.
Team of the Year Award
Team of the Year went to a cross functional team
working in Business and Law. The team, headed up by Mary Bishop,
supported international business students through the Graduate
Development Programme by small group facilitated learning and
providing opportunities for informal networking. Other members of
the team included: Dorothy James, Julie Gwatkin, Matt Rusling,
Natalie Everett. Speaking for the team Mary said:
"I think the graduate development programme plays a key part in developing and consolidating skills for the undergraduates. I have worked with the FBL placements team to develop and deliver a GDP programme for international business students, which offers them the opportunity to learn about both the work place and university environment in other countries. The students benefit from developing an understanding of the global environment. There is a high degree of completion, and many of the students go to the country they have researched as part of GDP to undertake work and study. The whole team works hard to offer support at UWE and abroad, and it is very satisfying to see the undergraduates developing in this way and using this experience to gain work in international businesses at home and abroad on graduation".
Award winners and nominees were presented with a Bristol Blue Glass paperweight by UWE Vice-Chancellor, Steve West.
