The closing date for nominations (except the Entrepreneur Award) is Tuesday 31 October 2017.

Award categories

Students can be nominated in one of the following categories:

Undergraduate Intern of the Year

Our Undergraduate Intern of the Year Award recognises students who have undertaken a summer internship and have exceeded employer expectations. Nominations are based on feedback from employers, with nominees then invited to submit a reflective piece on their experience.

Nomination process

  • Employers who have recruited an intern are issued a feedback form. All employers completing this form have the opportunity to nominate their student for one of our prestigious awards at Celebrating UWE Bristol Talent should they believe their student has exceeded expectation.
  • Nominated students are then invited to submit a personal statement describing their experiences.
  • All submissions are assessed and a shortlist of five nominees per award created.
  • The top three selected by our sponsor will be notified in December and invited to our awards dinner.

Sustainability Student of the Year

Bristol was the European Green Capital for 2015 and, since then, there have been many sustainability opportunities for students. This prize specifically awards and recognises the important contribution made by students and graduates within the sustainable arena, eg activity that relates to energy, nature, recycling or sustainable food and transport.

Nominations process

  • If you wish to apply you will need to complete a personal statement.
  • All submissions are assessed and a shortlist of five nominees created.
  • The shortlisted submissions are sent to the prize sponsor for review.
  • The top three selected by our sponsor will be notified in December and invited to our awards dinner.

Entrepreneur of the Year

The Entrepreneur of the Year Award recognises outstanding contribution and progress by a student entrepreneur. In order to be eligible, you will have to be part of this year’s Entrepreneur Internship Scheme.

Nominations process

  • All submissions are assessed and a shortlist of five nominees created.
  • The shortlisted submissions are sent to the sponsor for review.
  • A top three will be selected by the sponsor, who will be invited to present on the evening of the awards dinner on Thursday 15 February 2018.

Nominate yourself for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award (InfoHub login required the closing date is Saturday 30 September 2017).

Please note: On the evening of the awards you will be asked to present your business pitch to the audience. You can choose to pre-record your pitch or do it live on the evening. The audience will then be asked to select the overall winner.

Social Entrepreneur of the Year

The Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award recognises outstanding contribution and progress by a student social entrepreneur through one of our social enterprise support programmes.

Nominations process

  • If you wish to apply you will need to complete a personal statement. 
  • All submissions will assessed and a shortlist of five nominees created.
  • The shortlisted submissions are then sent to the prize sponsor for review.

Please note: It would be advantageous if you were still operating your social enterprise in December 2017 – so we are able to visit you and your project to make a short film.

Placement Students of the Year

These awards are designed to recognise the outstanding achievements of our UWE Bristol students during their sandwich placements, with nominations based on feedback from their employers. Awards include:

  • Faculty of Business and Law Placement Student of the Year
  • Faculty of Environment and Technology Placement Student of the Year
  • Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences Placement Student of the Year.

Nomination process

  • Employers who recruited a placement student are issued a feedback form and they have the opportunity to nominate their student for one of our prestigious awards should they believe their student has exceeded expectations.
  • Nominated students are then invited to submit a personal statement describing their experiences.
  • All submissions are assessed and a shortlist of five nominees is created.
  • The shortlisted submissions are sent to the prize sponsor for review.
  • The top three selected by our sponsor will then be notified in December and invited to our awards dinner. 

Global Experience Student of the Year

This award acknowledges the importance of our students who have taken the jump and gone global! As we now operate in a global economy the demand for students to demonstrate their global awareness has never been more important. As quoted by top international employer Price WaterHouse Cooper: “What global companies look for are people who can take a global perspective. If students have demonstrated they can work with other cultures and teams, that’s a big plus for us”.

  • The shortlisted submissions are sent to the prize sponsor for review.

Volunteer of the Year

The Volunteer of the Year Award recognises exceptional student volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to a voluntary or not-for-profit organisation, making a real impact on their work. In turn, the nominated students have developed a wide range of fantastic skills which will benefit them in their future careers.

  • Nominated students are invited to submit a personal statement describing their experiences.
  • All submissions are assessed and a shortlist of five nominees per award is created.
  • The shortlisted submissions are sent to the prize sponsor for review.
  • The top three selected by our sponsor will then be notified in December and invited to our awards dinner.

Arts, Creative Industries and Education Student of the Year

This award celebrates the creative problem solving and tenacious attitudes of our students who often choose to challenge themselves in order to develop their skills. We produce filmmakers and historians, teachers and actors, writers, designers and artists to name a few. The Arts, Creative Industries and Education Student (ACE) Work Student of the Year Award 2017/18 celebrates your achievements and enables you to reflect on your learning, which will ultimately inform and enhance your future career.

Nominations process

  • You will need to complete a personal statement.
  • All submissions are assessed and a shortlist of five nominees is created.
  • The shortlisted submissions are sent to the prize sponsor for review.
  • The top three selected by our sponsor will then be notified in December and invited to our awards dinner.

Nominate yourself for the ACE Student of the Year Award (InfoHub login required).

Key dates

  • Tuesday 31 October: Closing date for submission of nominations (except the Entrepreneur Award, which has a closing date of Saturday 30 September 2017).
  • September – November 2017: students invited to write reflective pieces/pitches; shortlisting occurs and finalists decided by sponsors unless otherwise stated by the nomination process (above) of an individual award category.
  • Week commencing Monday 4 December 2017 – all entrants are notified if they have been selected as a finalist. Finalists will receive their invitation to the awards ceremony.
  • Friday 22 December 2017 – finalists must have completed and returned their invitation.
  • Week commencing Monday 29 January 2018: Finalists must attend one of our ‘Winners Briefings’. These will be held at Frenchay Campus.
  • Thursday 15 February 2018: ‘Celebrating UWE Bristol Talent’ Awards night at the Exhibition and Conference Centre (EEC).

Frequently asked questions

What prizes do winners and finalists receive?

All prize winners will receive a financial award.

All finalists will receive recognition on your HEAR record (Higher Education Achievement Report), which this documentation records and tracks your achievements and progression including your degree award and can prove a useful tool as you embark on your chosen career.

Furthermore, all finalists will be invited to attend our ‘Celebrating UWE Bristol Talent’ Awards night accompanied by two guests of their choice.

When and where are prizes awarded?

All prizes will be awarded to finalists at a ceremony on Thursday 15 February 2018. We kindly request that all finalists attend this celebratory evening, which will include a two-course dinner and the prize presentation. The event will also be a chance to celebrate with friends and family, as well as network with numerous local and national businesses.

Am I allowed to bring guests and if so, who should I invite?

All finalists are invited to bring two guests of their choice to the awards night. In previous years, finalists tended to be accompanied by parents and/or friends.

Do I need to register and confirm my attendance for ‘Celebrating UWE Bristol Talent’?

All finalists will receive an email confirming their selection as finalist no later than Monday 4 December 2017. At this point, finalists will be required to complete a registration form highlighting:

  • their details and dietary requirements
  • guest details and dietary requirements.

Registration forms need to be returned by Friday 22 December 2017.

Will details about the evening be provided in advance?

Information about the evening will be provided largely via email. However, we encourage all finalists to attend one of three briefings which will provide a more detailed overview of the evening. Details of these will be provided on the registration form.
