Placements and internships case studies
Tom - BA International Relations and Politics
I started by working on a research position but this quickly
developed into a larger role which encompassed a variety of
different roles. I was given responsibility and was trusted to do
work in my own time and was asked what I would like to develop each
week rather than being in a strict, controlled environment.
Jess - BA Art and Visual Culture
For work experience I completed a three week marketing
placement at the Arnolfini in Bristol. I also helped
to organise medical conferences, helped with the marketing for
the degree show at UWE and worked
briefly at Spike Island before accepting my position as the Sales
and Marketing Assistant for Bristol Old Vic.
Sara - BSc Biomedical Sciences
I think the skills I have gained will definitely improve my
final year studies and future prospects. This experience has
definitely opened the door to the possibility of pursuing a career
in teaching.
Hannah - BA Graphic Design
I did a six week placement under the UWE grad scheme. My
portfolio was so much better after my work experience because I
worked on actual projects.
Hussain - BSc Business and Computing
I would encourage anyone who is in two minds about
considering a placement to go for it as it provides a clearer
picture of what is available to you after your degree.
Christopher - BSc Environmental Science
Do a placement year, even if it's not relevant to the job you
end up in, it will make you stand out from the crowd.
Daniel - BA Media Practice
Get work experience as early as possible in your degree. If I
hadn’t started work as a runner in my second year, I
probably wouldn’t have been offered a full time job straight after
I left university. I can’t stress how vital it is to get your name
out there as soon as you can.
Faheem - Law
Try and get involved in the placements promoted through
UWE
Careers and the vacation schemes as it helps to get your foot in
the door. A lot of people get jobs in law through previous roles
working as paralegals and claims handlers. This gives you a head
start and is a good idea to try and get a law related job during
the summer holidays or even after your studies (if you do not have
a training contract).
Hayley - BA Marketing
My placement year with Disney Interactive Studios was
invaluable; it allowed me to get an understanding of the department
and the skills it required. My marketing degree was also a good fit
with the career I was looking for and gave me the theory behind a
lot of tasks I would be completing.
Jemma - BA Business Studies and Human Resource Management
Stay on top of the recruitment market in your final year by
visiting company websites, not just agency websites.
Ross - BA Media Practise
At the end of my course at UWE I applied for
a three month placement as a runner for Icon Films that was
advertised through our placement office.
Sohelia - BA Film Studies and English
I entered onto the South West Screen Next Generation Training
Scheme and was chosen to be one of the six people on the scheme. I
had two weeks of television production based training and then
started a 26 week placement at Available Light.
Victoria - BA English
Get work experience, especially in the creative secot.
Investigate the main areas of editing, publishing, marketing,
public relations, design, production and foreign rights.
Beth - BA English and French
Prior to this work placement, I had no knowledge of
marketing. The team at Michon were incredibly supportive in helping
me learn the basics and then progressing further in order to become
a valuable member of the team.
Angharad - BA Business Information Systems
Do a placement and start looking early in the academic year
for work experience opportunities.
