The School of Education is one of the largest providers of initial and continuing professional development in the region and has a long-term commitment to providing high quality learning, teaching and research, as a means to a better future for all. In most cases, we do this through partnerships with a range of local schools, colleges and other organisations.
We seek to support the lifelong learning of educational professionals, and those intending to be such professionals, because we want the learners they support to have the maximum opportunities to fulfil their potential. The work of the School is underpinned by the desire to increase social justice through education. We are fortunate to be based in a state-of-the-art purpose-built building and look forward to sharing our provision with you.
As you will discover, if you spend time on this site, we offer a broad range of programmes. Recent and exciting developments for undergraduates (UG) include single honours degrees in Education Studies and Early Childhood Studies, which are for those interested in such disciplines but not, necessarily, in becoming qualified teachers. These UG programmes complement our existing ones for intending teachers. If you are already a graduate and thinking about teaching, you will find options for all phases from early years to post-compulsory education and nine different subjects for those interested in secondary education. A full-time postgraduate course is also offered to those interested in careers guidance.
Qualified professionals should find something of interest in our extensive continuing professional development provision.
If research is your main interest, then we can offer you postgraduate research degrees or opportunities to work with us on work-based research projects, perhaps funded by external agencies.
Priorities for the School over the next period include: consolidating and enhancing work in the field of lifelong learning, including learning and teaching in higher education; promoting work in this field of inclusive education; fostering partnership within and beyond the university to enhance the quality of programmes and research; extending the international dimension of our work.
Whatever your reason for visiting our website, I hope your needs can be met and, if not, let us know!
