The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education.

The REF is being undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies. Submissions from each subject area (or unit of assessment) are given a rank by a subject specialist peer review panel. These profiles are used to inform the allocation of quality weighted research funding each higher education institution receives from their national funding council.

For REF 2014, UWE has made submissions to 17 Units of Assessment. In total 323 staff were entered of which 55 are Early Career Researchers. Overall the submission consisted of 1138 research outputs (e.g. articles, book chapters, books, artworks, videos, exhibitions, conference contributions) produced within the REF census period from January 2008 to December 2013.

Submissions are currently being assessed. Results will be announced in December 2014 and the allocation of funding will be announced in spring 2015.
