About the REF

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education.

The REF is undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies. Submissions from each subject area (or Unit of Assessment) are given a rank by a subject specialist peer review panel. These profiles are used to inform the allocation of quality weighted research funding each higher education institution receives from their national funding council.

UWE REF 2014 submissions

For REF 2014, UWE submitted to 17 Units of Assessment (UOA). In total, 323 staff were entered of which 55 were Early Career Researchers. Overall, the submission consisted of 1,138 research outputs (eg articles, book chapters, books, artworks, videos, exhibitions, conference contributions) produced within the REF census period from January 2008 to December 2013.
