Here are the answers to some questions which we are frequently asked. If you need further information, please contact the CAR Office.

I have a visible difference/disfigurement which I am finding upsetting - can you help me please?

As a research centre, we do not provide direct advice and support ourselves. However, the charity Changing Faces is happy to help with any concerns about disfigurement and disfiguring conditions of any origin, whether present at birth or acquired later in life. Their website also has details of other organisations that may be able to help you. Also see sources of support for details of support groups.

What is CAR?

CAR is the Centre for Appearance Research, based in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of the West of England, Bristol. CAR acts as a focus and centre of excellence for psychological and interdisciplinary research in appearance, disfigurement and related studies. For more information see About CAR.

I am interested in the appearance aspects of a particular condition (eg burns, cleft); how can I find out more?

The CAR Publications list may be helpful to you. It has details of the research papers and publications written by members of the research centre. Some of the articles are available directly from the website and you can use the search facility to identify the papers in any specific area. Our researchers have specific expertise in particular areas and you may wish to contact them for further information on current, ongoing research into particular topics. Is CAR organising any seminars or conferences that I could attend?

I am studying psychological aspects of appearance at school/university. How can I find information for my studies?
