About the Centre for Appearance Research
The CAR strives to make a real difference to the lives of the millions of people worldwide with appearance-related concerns. We conduct applied, interdisciplinary research to understand the size, impact and root causes of appearance concerns. We use this knowledge to develop practical, evidence-based strategies to help individuals and communities, and to shift social norms.
CAR’s research and consultancy services inform and support healthcare and education provision, social policy, media, corporate social responsibility agendas, and other areas of society. We actively collaborate with charitable organisations, NHS Trusts, businesses, schools, universities, politicians, and policy-makers across the UK and overseas. We also lead a European Union research network with members from 36 countries.
Supporting best practice
The Centre supports and promotes best practice in recruitment, retention and promotion of staff via Athena SWAN initiative. Athena SWAN addresses gender inequalities in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine in higher education. The University and the Department of Applied Sciences, based in the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, have recently achieved Athena SWAN Bronze Awards.
