Welcome Information

Welcome Weekend

To make sure everything is in place for induction week you must come along to the Glenside Campus on either Saturday or Sunday of Welcome Weekend. We will be able to ensure you have completed your online registration properly and check any outstanding academic certificates or Criminal Record Bureau checks which may be holding things up. Drop into the Glenside Student Centre on Saturday 17 September between 10.00 and 16.00 or Sunday 18 September between 11.00 and 15.00. There will also be lots of things going on to help you settle into University life and it will be an opportunity for you to meet staff and other new students, so come along and join us!

When does my course start?

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme will begin on Monday 19 September 2011 at 9.00 at the Glenside Campus.

Please report to Reception on arrival where staff will be available to direct you to your first session.

Induction week timetable

Your induction week timetable is available to download.

You will be able to access your individual timetable through myUWE once you have registered, using your UWE ID number. Please print out and bring a copy of your timetable with you for induction week, this will ensure you attend the correct sessions.

Placements

You will normally undertake practice placement experience within your selected zone. However in order to provide the full range experiences particularly during year 1 of the programme, you may be required to undertake practice outside of your nominated Zone. You will be notified by the Practice Learning Unit (PLU).

Contact details

If for any reason you are unable to commence this programme or have a query, please contact:

Alison Gavin | 0117 32 81140 | Alison.Gavin@uwe.ac.uk

The holiday dates planned in the programme for year one are weeks starting 18 and 25 December 2011, 8 April 5, 12, 19 August 2012. Year two and three are not yet finalised but we try to organise the holidays around Christmas and Easter holiday dates and some weeks in August, but these will not always correspond with all school holiday dates in the different education authorities.

Study days are normally 9.30 - 16.30.

IT

You will need to use a range of IT skills while you are a student with us so if you are a bit rusty it would be a good idea to put some practice in before you start your course to ensure you are familiar with using e-mail, the internet and software such as Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. UWE has developed a range of resources to help students which you will be directed to at the relevant time but for now you might find it useful to have a look at a recent version of our Student Computing at UWE guide.

Reminder

In previous correspondence you will have already been informed about our requirements regarding:

• Academic certificates
• Criminal Records Bureau checks
• Occupational Health clearance

If any of these requirements are still outstanding you must send the relevant paperwork to us, as instructed, as soon as possible, preferably ahead of Welcome Week/end and induction.

Reading List

Indicative books which you may need to purchase for each module will be provided by the Module Leaders when you start the programme. A book sale is normally arranged shortly after you commence the programme where you can buy indicative books.

You may want to buy a basic midwifery text book and a basic midwifery physiology book to do some pre-course reading. We are happy to recommend

Baston, H. Hall, J. & Henley-Einion, A. (2009) Midwifery Essentials: Basics Vol 1 Edinburgh: Churchill Livingstone
and
Coad, J. Dunstall, M. (2005) Anatomy and Physiology for Midwives London: Elsevier

Breast feeding doll

As part of our educational strategy for breast feeding, we would like you to purchase a small soft doll, the size of a newborn baby. This doll will be used for teaching practical breast feeding sessions over the next three years. Please do not purchase an expensive doll. You should only need to spend a couple of pounds, and there are various supermarkets that sell them. You will need the doll for lectures that will be taking place in September.

Student NHS Bursaries

The initial bursary payment from NHS Student Bursaries should be paid within the first two weeks of registration. Students will receive a two month instalment in advance. This will be paid directly into your bank account.

Queries concerning non-payment of a bursary should be directed to the Student One Stop Shop (S1SS) or relevant Site Office. Students in receipt of a bursary must ensure that NHS Student Bursaries are informed of changes in bank details via the PSM10 form which is available from the S1SS and Site Offices.

You are advised to bring sufficient funds to support yourself for at least the first month of term.

Uniform

Uniforms will be provided free of charge, details of which will be given to you once you commence the programme.

Access arrangements for disabled students

The Student Advisers are available for students to consult on a range of issues, including access arrangements that are needed to ensure equal access for disabled students. If you indicated on your application form that you consider yourself disabled, then you should expect to hear from them before the programme starts. However, whether you indicated this on your form or not we would like to draw your attention to this service.

If you consider yourself disabled in any way and would like advice on how the Faculty can promote your inclusion in the programme please contact the Student Advisers at Glenside.

Please note that arrangements may be needed to ensure equal access for students with conditions including dyslexia, mental health problems, long-term illness, sensory or physical impairment.
