Semantic and Description-Driven Systems Unit
Stemming from work done at CERN on the construction of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on flexibility of production line software, this unit concentrates on spinning out the unique software engineering approach developed during that time, that of Description-Driven Systems, and applying it to other domains.
CRISTAL, the software platform developed in collaboration with CERN and CNRS, the French public scientific research body, is maintained by the unit and is being extended into such areas as semantics and distributed execution, to broaden its scope for meaningful provenance data collection and management, data integration and flexible model version management and thus extend its use into new areas.
The unit is based at CERN, and participates in EC projects and collaborations with the private software sector in such areas as scientific workflow tracking, heterogeneous legacy database integration and research-based production line orchestration.
It is currently working with the startup company, Technoledge in France and Switzerland, and collaborates with the M1i and ALPHA3i companies in the FP7 Marie Curie IAPP project CRISTAL-ISE.
