Professional development

We have a long-established reputation for enabling professional development in the disciplines covered within the department.

  • We offer a range of short courses covering planning and architecture topics, related topics in spatial planning, construction, built environment law, air quality policies and practice and more.
  • We lead on the delivery of an annual Planning Law and Policy Conference
  • We offer a variety of programmes aimed at those in work who want to qualify in the field of planning as mid-career professionals
  • We offer consultancy and advisory services
  • From day one, our students are developed to become professionals through the provision of real life projects throughout their studies

Our Spatial Planning programme - offered as individual short courses as well as an MA -was developed through funding provided by the UK Government to increase the knowledge and skills of mid-career practitioners coming to terms with the spatial planning system. It is completely web-based, offering an online learning programme which you can study at a time and place suited to you. You can chose to study individual topics to develop your learning and understanding in specific areas. Alternatively you can also build up your studies of the individual topics in order to gain the MA Spatial Planning or even towards a professional doctorate in Spatial Planning. Contact us to find out more.

We have a long experience of distance learning courses in planning. We run and manage the only distance learning course in the UK for students wanting to become qualified planners, known as the Joint Distance Learning MA in Town and Country Planning, which is operated in partnership with a number of other UK universities.
