The acquisition of three-dimensional information in order to determine the range and surface geometry of objects finds important application in metrology, reverse engineering, inspection, quality and process control.
However, the wider application of three-dimensional imaging devices has been limited, particularly in numerous low cost applications, where there is a potential market for free roaming hand-held devices.
The goal of this research was to establish the feasibility of new technology both in terms of new applications and enabling know-how, technology and tools, with a view to the development of new 3D imaging devices. An investigation into techniques appropriate for new kinds of hand-held technology was undertaken.
