Introduction to the Department

Building under construction

The Department of Architecture and the Built Environment is a broad-based intellectual community committed to an inter-disciplinary approach to the creation and management of sustainable buildings, whether they are in urban or rural environments, residential or commercial, new or refurbished.

We are committed to the making of places and buildings at all scales, encompassing regional spatial strategy, construction management, urban design, architecture and the design of interior spaces.

Sustainability and the environment are common themes across all of our courses, and research in these subjects underpins all our teaching. We know how important it is that the places, spaces, buildings and communities of the future are designed with sustainability in mind. Design, construction and development must also be organised and managed in a professional environment. Work has to be planned to ensure it is on time, within budget and to quality targets. And during occupation, built assets need to be refurbished, maintained, conserved and adapted to maximise their value for users and owners.

Here at the multi-disciplinary Department of Architecture and the Built Environment, we’re concerned with all these aspects and ensure our courses offer the necessary knowledge and skills you need to succeed in this field.

We've invested heavily in our facilities, and offer our students the chance to work in our award-winning purpose built studios. We also organise regular field trips and site visits to a variety UK and International destinations, helping you gain invaluable experience and understanding of Architecture and the Built Environment in the real world.

We are an accredited partner of the major professional bodies including RIBA, ARBRiCS, RTPI, CIOB, CIAT, CIH and CIBSE. We have established partnerships with global players in the design, construction and property sectors, ensuring our courses are current and relevant to industry needs and leading to industrial placements, advice and professional practice. Our world leading research is used to ensure our programmes remain at the cutting edge. Combined, this translates into the right combination of academic rigour and industry expertise to get your career on track when you graduate.

Whether you are changing career, continuing your studies or boosting your current job prospects, we look forward to welcoming you to our student community soon.
