'Transform' – using expressive arts to sustain the engagement of disaffected young people (2009)
Sponsor: Kingswood Foundation
Kingswood Foundation and the John Cabot City of Technology College commissioned the Department of Education and Childhood at UWE Bristol to evaluate an intensive and dynamic arts education experience designed to reengage young people in learning, prevent pupils from being excluded and transform them into positive role models.
The initiative provided identified young people with five days of master classes based at the Technology College and run by contemporary artists. These classes offered tuition in activities such as graffiti, dance, film production and DJ-ing. This was complemented by daily motivational, personal development sessions to challenge negative ideas that students may have had about themselves and their ability to learn. They drew on each day’s activities to reflect on how, as a group and as individuals, different tasks were approached.
To encourage the young people to make the link between their experience of these activities and their futures, several local celebrities were invited to attend students’ presentation of their work, to talk about the career that led to their achievements as recognised artists. Information was provided for students of summer arts activities in their area in order to sustain the momentum established during the week.
