Global Operations Research Unit (GO)

Project management, project based work, and global projectification of society

The theme, in its broadest sense, reflects the research group members' interests in the management of projects and programmes, contemporary project management (PM) methodologies and procedures, organisational complexity of projects and project risk assessment and management, and the issues around collaborative work, learning and knowledge sharing in project environments. The key international contribution of the research work under this theme is in enriching, both methodologically and theoretically, the field of project management beyond its conventional boundaries by introducing a variety of organisational and sociological concepts relevant to understanding project management practice. The context of research ranges from public sector capital projects to a vast palette of industrial and development projects, IT/IS implementation, research programmes  and organisational change initiatives. The Unit members are recognised as active and critical scholars within an international PM academic research network known as Making Projects Critical, nurturing at the same time close links with practitioners and professional bodies: USA based PMI (Project Management Institute) and national APM (Association for Project Management).

The link with other RU and centres within BBS (such as BCLOE and RU for Defence Economics) are strengthened through international scholarship in the field of critical management studies (CMS) and organisational theory; and the management and governance of complex aerospace projects respectively.

Key members and associates: Dr Svetlana Cicmil (SOM -BBS); Prof Derek Braddon (DoE-BBS), Dr Hugo Gaggiotti (BCLOE-OS); Dr Damian Hodgson (University of Manchester Business School, UK); Dr Janice Thomas (University of Athabasca – Canada); Johann Packendorff and Monica Lindgren (Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm,  Sweden)
