Status Letters

From time to time during your studies at UWE you may need to prove, either to an individual or an organisation, that you are a student. This can be done using a student status letter. Basic status letters can be produced via myUWE. Sometimes you may need additional information. If this is the case please contact FBL reception or complete a Request for a Status Letter form stating clearly your requirements.

Due to the high volume of requests at certain times of year it is not always possible to provide you with a status letter straight away. However it is our aim to ensure that all requests for standard status letters are dealt with and made available for collection within 5 working days. Once prepared, letters will usually be left for you to collect from an Information Point (1D11, S Block or Q Block). However, if necessary, you may request that the letter be posted to you.

PLEASE NOTE
Letters requiring the inclusion of more complex or detailed information may take longer to produce and although we would always aim to have letters ready within 5 working days, it may take up to 10 days for these letters to be ready. Please bear this in mind if you require a status letter for a particular purpose such as a Visa renewal.  The earlier you contact FBL the more time we will have to ensure you have the information you need when you need it.

Council Tax Certificates

If you need proof that you are a student for council tax purposes you can print a council tax certificate from myUWE . Some students may not be eligible for a council tax certificate if this option is not available in myUWE please contact an Information Point.

Visa Extension Letters

Please come to an Information Point (1D11, S Block, Q Block) to fill out a form. You will need to bring your current Visa and passport with you. Visa Extension letters are not produced by the faculty but are processed by the International Development Office (IDO). The IDO will contact you directly when the letter is ready for you to collect. Further information on the Points Based System for student visas can be found by contacting Student Services.

Post Study Work Visas

If you require a letter confirming your attendance with BBS for the purpose of obtaining a post study work visa you should contact an Information Point with FULL details of your requirements. These letters can take between 5 and 10 working days to produce depending on the information you require. You must include the following information:

  • your FULL name as it appears on your passport
  • your 8 digit student number
  • your date of birth
  • the programme you studied (e.g. BA Business Studies)
  • the dates you were at UWE (e.g. 2005 – 2008)
  • any additional information you require or that has been notified to you as necessary by UKBA (e.g. degree classification).

Reference Requests

If you are a past or present student of the Faculty of Business and Law you may require a reference confirming your time with the faculty. A reference could be required for a number of reasons:

  • applying for a job
  • applying for another course,
  • to join an agency
  • to obtain a visa to travel overseas (If you are a UK student).

Our standard reference will confirm the following basic details:

  • course of study
  • dates of study
  • if requested, the final result you obtained.

If you studied relatively recently with us and your record is held electronically this should be a straightforward process and we would aim to process your request within 5 working days.

If you studied with us some time ago, however, it may be necessary to search our archive for your record and your request may take up to 10 working days.

If you need a more detailed reference from an academic, you should clearly indicate this in your request and also give the name of the academic you would wish to provide the reference.

Please note: an academic reference can take considerably longer to process as this depends upon the availability of the academic. In some cases the member of academic staff may no longer work for the university and in this case we will contact you.

The dissemination of personal information about UWE students or alumni is regulated by the Data Protection Act 1998 and students will need to give written consent authorising us to release information about their studies to a third party. We can not release information about a student’s studies or enter into any correspondence regarding this until consent is received.

In order to make a request, please supply us with the following information:

  • Student’s FULL name (including details of any name changes)
  • Student’s date of birth
  • The programme the student studied (e.g BA Business Studies)
  • The dates they studied at UWE (e.g. 2005 – 2008)
  • Any additional information you require (e.g. degree classification)
  • The student’s consent to release this information to you
  • The address the reference should be sent to and, if applicable, for whose attention.

To request a reference please contact an Information Point.

Student Adviser Appointments

If you need to speak to a student adviser you should contact an Information Point on 0117 32 85678.  Please be aware that at certain times of the year student adviser appointments fill up several days in advance and it may not always be possible to see or speak to an adviser at short notice, no matter how urgent your request. If you are unable to keep your appointment please ring us so that we can give your slot to another student.
