Thank you to all our telethon supporters
An amazing £63,000 was raised for our Better Together fund thanks to this February’s telethon. Students and staff were also overwhelmed by the goodwill of the alumni who took part. Many of these spoke to students at length, giving them useful advice, suggestions and contacts. This support will go a long way towards helping them establish their careers.
We’d like to say a massive thankyou to everyone who donated. Your money will help change lives. The Better Together fund helps disadvantaged students access education through bursaries; funds research that impacts society; and supports global and local communities.
Thanks to the fund, Barry, a bursary recipient, was able to finish his studies despite struggling with financial and mental health issues. He thanked donors, saying, “this bursary will contribute to fulfilling my ambition to continue my studies. I thank you heartily.”
As well as providing job-hunting tips and ideas for potential careers, alumni shared stories about their time at UWE Bristol. All 30 students who took part thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Law student Flora Ragless-Green said, “It was really interesting speaking to alumni, learning about what they studied, their time at UWE Bristol and what they're up to now. It was a great opportunity to network too and I came away with many contacts and suggested places to apply for work. It also improved my communication skills and telephone manner. I would definitely do it again.”
Second year Biological Sciences student Nisha thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As well as telling alumni about the Better Together Fund, she chatted with them about their time at UWE Bristol and where their studies had led them. She also spoke to an alumna who had done the same course.
“She gave me some great advice, saying that a placement would be vital in getting employed after graduating. I also enjoyed talking to her about the work that she was currently undertaking.“
Nisha went on to say, “The best advice I received was from a lady in Bath. I spoke to her about my worries about making friends last year. She said, 'Everyone has those worries, but if you just be yourself you'll find like-minded people... those will be the friends that you keep and stick by you', which really stuck with me for some reason. I would like to say to everyone I spoke to, thank you so much for taking the time out to speak to me. I really enjoyed our conversations.”
The Twitter-sphere was abuzz after the telethon as students tweeted with @UWEAlumni about their conversations. Extending thanks to the alumni involved, they tweeted:
“Thank you so much for taking the time out to speak to me I really enjoyed our conversation and I wish you well in the future” @NishaJethwaa
“A huge thank you for all the donations and taking the time to talk to me!” @tom_laurence
“..thank you for giving me your time/advice, it was great to hear advice for my career and from all walks of life! @ChronicHill
