Support for Action on Pre-Eclampsia
Katherine Smart needs your support
Article written by UWE Bristol alumna Rebecca Cheetham
Katherine Smart is a member of the UWE Bristol alumni network, a Psychology graduate who was also the Sports President for the UWE Bristol Students Union. Now a fourth-year medical student at the University of Southampton, Katherine is at the end of her 13th week of training for the truly gruelling Virgin London Marathon. The London Marathon will be held on 21 April and, although a difficult challenge for anyone, will be a fantastic day all round. Katherine will be one of tens of thousands of runners competing in the event, including Olympic double-gold medal winner Mo Farah, with many running for the charities they are passionately supporting.
Katherine is running the London Marathon for Action on Pre-Eclampsia (APEC). APEC is the only UK Company dedicated to Pre-Eclampsia. APEC (action-on-pre-eclampsia.org.uk) explain the condition: “Pre-Eclampsia is the most common of the serious complications of pregnancy. It is caused by a defect in the placenta, which joins the mother and baby and supplies the baby with nutrients and oxygen from the mother’s blood.”
Hoping to raise money for APEC, Katherine has taken a slightly different tact to most, with regards to her training and fundraising. Katherine is writing a daily blog about the highs and lows of her marathon training, as this will be the first one she has ever competed in. You can follow Katherine’s experiences on her blog, where she talks about her fantastic completion of 22 miles in just 3 hours and 28 minutes. You can also follow Katherine on Twitter, where she tweets daily about her training.
Furthermore, Katherine is doing one training run per week in
fancy dress and is aiming to do this most weeks at Southampton Parkrun.
So far, Katherine has been Where's Wally and a fairy, and has
made it into the Southampton Parkrun newsletter.
Katherine’s fancy dress doesn’t stop here though; she has also taken to wearing her costumes during other fundraising events; donning her pink tutu and fairy wings while selling homemade cakes to her colleagues at Southampton General Hospital.
Get Involved: Katherine invites you to join her at 9am on Saturday 20 April 2013 for her last fancy dress Park Run at Southampton Common. The dress code is a Doctors and Nurses theme; you can run alongside her and donate some change to this important cause. See Katherine’s Facebook page for further information: “Drs and nurses fancy dress at Southampton Parkrun”.
