UWE improving sustainability

  • Buildings' carbon emissions cut by 31% since 2001 with aim of 50% by 2021.
  • 500 kgs of food waste a week saved from landfill through waste collections.
  • New orchard planted at Frenchay with plums, medlars, quinces, apples and pears.
  • Used oil from UWE’s kitchens heating R Block at Frenchay, saving energy.
  • More waste recycled - 46% in 2010 from e.g. paper and plastic bottles.
  • Most energy efficient computers bought for staff and students.
  • Student Switchoff campaign cut electricity use by 13% in Student Village since 2008.
  • Local seasonal and organic food available at cafes, farmers markets and campus vegetable stalls.
  • Fairtrade spending on products in shop and cafes increased to £180,000.
  • Volunteer staff and students working in 122 organisations and 45 schools/colleges.
  • Passenger numbers up by 29% on low cost Wessex Red bus service in Autumn 2011.

  • Won national Green Gown award 2010 for five years continuous improvement in sustainability performance in the higher education sector.
  • UWE Student Union won NUS Gold Sound Impact award for environmental improvements in 2010.
