Tackling the big issues
Our collaborative research and development has a direct impact on people's lives - finding answers to real world problems.
World class research
Our world class research and cross-disciplinary thinking achieves genuine results. Groundbreaking work includes researching the amazing antibacterial properties of Himalayan oregano against the superbug MRSA. Along with its potential impact on healthcare, this project received a SEED award (pdf) for providing the local community with a sustainable, eco-friendly source of income and for contributing to the conservation of herbs in their natural habitat.
UWE's Institute for Bio-sensing Technology has also patented a way of using bioluminescent bacteria to predict which leukaemia patients will respond to therapy. By predicting the effectiveness of cancer chemotherapy drugs to be used, treatment can become truly tailored to the patient.
The Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) is making a real difference to the lives of thousands of people with appearance related concerns across the world. Recent research by CAR into body image among women in universities across the UK, found that 30% would trade one year of their life to achieve their ideal body weight and shape. The Centre is now working with the Succeed Foundation, an eating disorder charity, to deliver a programme to promote positive body image among women.
