Masterplan updates - January 2016
An update on the Campus Masterplan projects and how the main developments across our sites are progressing.
Wallscourt Park residences
After completing phase 1 of our Wallscourt Park residences programme, which created 396 more bedrooms for our students (and 408 more bed spaces in total), Phase 2 is now underway. Work began in December 2015, and we’ll be adding a further 561 bedrooms between September 2016 and April 2017. More about the Wallscourt Park residences project.
New Business and Law School
A £50m project is well underway to build a new building to house the Bristol Business School and Bristol Law School. Located in the heart of Frenchay Campus, the new Faculty of Business and Law building will provide an inspiring new business and learning environment, reinforcing the practice-based approach and real-world connections we’re well known for as a university.
The heartzone amenity space was ready ahead of schedule, reinstating the link between the new Students’ Union and the rest of the campus. The final paving will take place in summer 2016. Overall completion is scheduled for November 2016, with the building opening planned for early 2017. More about the new Business and Law School building.
University Enterprise Zone
As one of only four universities chosen to set up a University Enterprise Zone (UEZ), we’re now developing a world-class facility for research and enterprise, which will allow for greater collaboration between academic scientists and small and medium-sized businesses.
Focused on innovative developments in the fields of robotics, bio-sensing, bio-technology, bio-medical and related high-tech fields, the UEZ will be located in T Block, one of the former Hewlett Packard buildings.
With a £8m contribution from the Local Enterprise Partnership and the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, work on this £22m scheme began in November 2015. The new building will open in August 2016, with the final parts of the scheme complete by December 2016.
New Students’ Union building
The new £10m Students' Union (SU) building was completed in July 2015. The two interlinked buildings facing the central plaza area bring together all SU services into one accessible location so that students can easily find the services they need.
The new building provides vibrant spaces to enhance the work of student reps, bringing together volunteering activities, societies, sports and networks for students, into a multi-purpose engagement and social area. There’s also a café, bar, shop, and bookable studio space, as well as outdoor landscaped spaces and a courtyard that can be used with marquees for major annual events. More about the new Students’ Union building.
City Campus – Arnolfini
We have now embarked on a formal partnership with Arnolfini, one of Bristol’s most influential arts centres, located on the city’s vibrant harbourside. The partnership with Arnolfini will see our Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education collaborating with the centre on programming, education workshops, seminars, events and academic research.
Following a refurbishment programme of floors 3, 4 and 5 of the Arnolfini building, our BA Graphic Design, MA Graphic Arts and BA Drawing and Print programmes have now relocated there, enabling us to focus on the ongoing redevelopment of Bower Ashton. More about the City Campus developments.
City Campus – Bower Ashton
We are continuing to invest in Bower Ashton to refresh our facilities, grow our services, and ensure our students and staff have access to state-of-the-art learning and teaching environments. We received planning consent for our Bower Ashton Masterplan in August 2015, and detailed consent for Building 1 has also since been granted. This project will provide dedicated digital media spaces within a new three-storey building. Work on site started during early May 2016 in readiness for opening the new building in time for the September 2017 term. More about the Bower Ashton developments.
St Matthias Campus
We sold our St Matthias Campus and officially handed over the keys to its new owners in June 2015. The much-loved building will be keeping its links with education as the new owners, Barratt Homes, will create a new housing development, with a school – the Steiner Academy, Bristol – taking occupation of the listed buildings.
Our new skills simulation suite at Glenside was ready in July 2015 and provides our Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences with the ability to train paediatric and midwifery nursing staff in a tailor-made, practice-led environment. The new suite includes a four-bed children’s ward, one-bed adolescent ward, sensory room for children with disabilities, consultation room, and space to rehearse ‘difficult news’ conversations.
A continuous stream of refurbishments and alterations are underway to build teaching and other new learning spaces at Glenside, to equip our students with the hands-on skills and experience they need to progress in their careers.
