Basketball

UWE Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports at UWE Bristol. Both the Mens 1st and Womens 1st compete in Western 1A, with the men’s 2nd Team being increasingly competitive.

UWE Basketball thrives with its strong relationship with Bristol’s only professional basketball team, the Bristol Flyers, who play British Basketball League. With this affiliation the UWE Bristol programme has seen 10 current and former players compete for the Flyers national league teams in the last two seasons.

Facilities

At Frenchay Campus the halls of residence and Centre for Sport allow young student-athletes the opportunity to live an elite athletic lifestyle while combining their studies. UWE CFS promotes a 2 court hall where UWE men’s first team play BUCS on Wednesday’s and a High Performance Gym on site with training at WISE Arena in the week, where the Bristol Flyers train for BBL competition.

Training and Competition

The UWE Basketball programme has 2 men’s teams and 1 women’s and all three teams receive regular coaching throughout the week, preparing them for BUCS competitions. As well as playing on Wednesday’s both the men’s and women’s programmes play in the West of England Basketball Association League, a great outlet for both elite and developing athletes.

The top end UWE men players compete in either the BBL Bristol Flyers or the Division 4 National League Bristol Flyers II. Currently there are 6 student-athletes representing the university with the Flyers. Bristol Flyers have a new Womens National League team starting this season to support UWE Bristol top female players as well as WEBBA.

Strength and Conditioning is built around the timetable of the athlete so it fits in with their studies. When working out there is a Strength and Conditioning Coach dedicated to work with the basketball programme.
